If you like one of a kind, raw, never heard before Mississippi River Blues music, there is an event that is a must see! The Aftab Committee is hosting Johnny Azari, a blues musician and comedian, at Bossa Bistro in Adams Morgan, Washington D.C. on June 22nd at from 7PM.
Johnny Azari was born in Shiraz, Iran, was relocated to New York City at a young age and now lives in New Orleans. Johnny plays his own mutant form of the Mississippi Delta Blues. What makes his shows even more engaging is that he blends his music with storytelling and hardcore comedy. A great combo for a great evening!
Azari has been on national tour since 2013, and he recorded his fourth LP, Songs From A Motel Room, during his 2016 tour. Johnny has scored film (Illusions and Mirrors, starring Natalie Portman), served as guest lecturer and performer at Brown University, and seen two of his videos, “Occupation Blues” and “Freedom Glory Be Our Name” gain viral success.
In addition to hearing the unique music of Johnny Azari, you will be treated to two other Iranian-American musicians in the opening act. Boston-based singer-songwriter Muhammad Seven and Richmond-based heavy metal punk musician Shurewin will entertain before Johnny takes the stage.
Muhammad Seven (Nima Samimi) is a singer-songwriter born and raised in Boston, MA. His narrative lyricism pays as much homage to Hafiz and Saadi as it does to Bob Dylan and Leonard Cohen, with deeply personal and political statements nestled amongst metaphors and vivid specificity. You might also listen carefully for the unmistakable influence of ‘90’s era hip-hop.
